Community-based urban rooftop gardening to ensure self-sufficiency
The growing global population in urban areas brings an increasing vulnerability to climate change and heatwaves due to the urban heat island effect. This effect causes cities to heat up faster than their surroundings. Particularly at risk are disadvantaged groups, the elderly, and children, who suffer from heat stress.
Community-based urban gardening on rooftops is a comprehensive approach that offers ecological, economic, and social benefits. Its aim is to cool cities during summer, promote local food production, and encourage social interaction. Experimental green roofs incorporating this type of gardening show promising environmental impacts. This can be especially impactful for vulnerable communities like those in Nagorno-Karabakh, enhancing self-sufficiency and unity.
