Greenway Bicycle Sharing: Helping urban dwellers reduce their carbon footprint
Individuals' lifestyle choices significantly contribute to global warming via greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Urban dwellers are responsible for almost two-thirds of global GHG emissions, making it challenging to achieve recommended carbon footprint reduction levels of 2-2.5 tons of CO2eqv per person by 2030. Further, in emerging cities like Kathmandu, urbanites find it even more challenging to undertake mindful consumption and green mobility due to socio-technical complexities. Moreover, a gap exists in behavioral data and data science to design human-centric solutions for sustainable behavioral change. Technology can transform people's attitudes, but it must be coupled with human-centric data analysis to understand users' preferences and habits. Personalized solutions that cater to individual users, and techniques such as gamification and access to green products, are necessary for continuous engagement but are lagging in current technological solutions that promote climate action.
Greenway Nepal is a mobile/web app that helps urban dwellers reduce their carbon footprint by switching to a green lifestyle. Users earn Greenups (digital currency) for low-carbon choices like using their own bicycles or using public bicycles from Greenway. The Greenups earned is redeemable on the platform's marketplace. Businesses (Green Partners) listed on the platform comply with a green standard, promoting mindful consumerism. Users can connect, participate in events and competitions, and achieve green goals together. The app's data analysis can suggest personalized recommendations for products and services that match users' preferences and habits. Using local data and mapping, the app can also suggest the best navigation routes for biking, optimizing users' travel experience and reducing their carbon footprint. With this feature, users can discover new, low-carbon transportation options that help them reduce their environmental impact while navigating their cities with ease. Thus, we tend to increase the accessibility of people to bicycles in the cities through our bicycle-sharing program to solve decongestion, and air pollution problems.
