Transforming Waste and Empowering Communities for Sustainable Environmental Solutions
Over 90% of all waste collected in Rwandan cities ends up in landfills, leading to environmental concerns and the closure of many landfills. Additionally, the heavy reliance on firewood and charcoal for cooking and heating causes deforestation, with 72 hectares lost annually.
Our project is about establishing the TWGC (Turning Waste into Gold Centre) within the Ruhengeri Institute of Applied Sciences. The center's objective is to train students, staff, and the local community in recycling, waste prevention, and the production of briquettes and organic fertilizer from waste. The project aims to empower women in rural areas to transform waste into usable products, improving the environment and promoting sustainable practices.
