Networking session with participants of the Alumniportal Community Challenge 2022
From June to July 2022, the Alumniportal Deutschland organized a community challenge looking for ideas from the alumni community that could contribute to ecofriendly intensifications of agricultural systems.
During this networking sessions, you can get to know some of the challenge participants, learn about their ideas and how they want to develop them into social business concepts. Get in touch, discuss and connect with these aspiring entrepreneurs! They are looking forward to exchanging with you as well!
Here you can learn more about the challenge ideas that will be presented during the conference:
Digital Beehive platform by Ricardo Paris, Bruno Ginciene / Brazil
Apicultural productivity is determined largely by the land use in the pollination area and the distance between beehives. The platform Digital Beehive will be a tool to support beekeepers planning the identification of optimal location and quantity of beehives that can be installed in a given territory. The platform will also provide automatic mapping of land uses, thus quantifying the productive area and determining its productive potential, foreseeing the economic feasibility and sustainability of beekeeping practices.
Water Soil Conservation Basins by Elyeza Bakaze, Uganda
East Africa is highly vulnerable to climate change effects, which affects food and income security of more than 75 million people. Perceived climate effects are not only a threat to smallscale farmers to lose their yields and income, but to all value chain actors affected. Water Soil Conservation Basins (WaSCoB) are proposed to improve food security (SDG2), reduce poverty (SDG1), and enhance adaption to climate change (SDG13) at a local scale.
MeteoMex IoT by Robert Winkler, Mexico/Germany
The productivity of agriculture depends largely on physical parameters such as soil moisture and air temperature. As those parameters can vary a lot between different regions, and even in defined climatic zones, micro-environments could allow or prevent the growing of particular plants. Hence, precise data of physical parameters for choosing adequate cultivars, and for controlling growth conditions are required for successful food production. Commercial agronomic Internet-of-Things (IoT) systems can manage this data, but are costly and proprietary technology prevents the adoption to custom needs. MeteoMex created an open hardware/ software platform, which is low-cost and 'hackable' for agriculture 4.0 and environmental monitoring ('Citizen Science').
Agrophotovoltaics by Jairo Hernández, Colombia
Agrophotovoltaics refers to the farming process where crops are grown underneath arrays of elevated solar panels. This innovative solution allows to produce electrical energy and food in a sustainable way using the same area of land.
Mushroom fruiting houses by Ronnie Ssejjuko / Uganda
The project looks at simultaneously producing food (mushrooms) and energy (in the form of briquettes) from the spent mushroom waste (SMW). We are designing and fabricating mushroom fruiting rooms which are integrated with an irrigation system running on solar PV.
