VIRTUAL COFFEE BREAK (Recording)

Language: English

Climate crisis, carbon neutrality, net-zero, sustainability, green, circular economy etc. are household names in our current society as we seek to address the effects of climate change.  An interesting perspective is regenerative systems that go beyond net-zero targets to seek improvement of societal states or the state of precious resources.  Energy that accounts for more than 75% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions holds a high potential for emission reduction and creation of regenerative systems.

In this Virtual Coffee Break, Prof. Dr. Ombaka highlights the role of clean hydrogen in igniting regenerative energy systems, that go beyond net-zero targets to impact societal changes. Within this scope, aspects such as national green hydrogen strategies and the sustainability of clean hydrogen projects are discussed.  Attention is drawn to the impact of clean hydrogen projects on the environment, economy, society and governance, that all contributes towards a just energy transition. Equally, the role of clean hydrogen as a sustainable renewable energy storage as well as pathway towards abating hard to de-fossilize sectors will be discussed.

Finally, the talk will conclude with an overview of ongoing hydrogen research projects in which Prof. Dr. Ombaka is/will be involved. This will mainly focus on future engagement with fabrication of Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) water electrolyzer and fuel cell test bench, and current electrocatalytic production of sustainable synthetic fuels and solar-driven purification of wastewaters and its potential use for hydrogen production.
