Empirical Research
Features and Methods
Empirical research denotes an academic and scientific approach in which academics and systematically collect and analyse data. This type of scientific and academic work aims to develop theories and then to validate or invalidate them based on the collected data. This enables academics, and researchers to describe phenomena or to make propositions regarding reality.
What are the main features of empirical research?
Empirical research starts with the formulation of an hypothesis, in other words the research issue. This is then reviewed by the researchers and confirmed or refuted depending on the results.
It involves collating and processing data, which can be obtained in different ways. Empirical research always follows a systematic and in which there are clearly defined steps. This assures accuracy and reliability of the results.
It is also required to ensure repeatability of the research results. Other academics, scientists and researchers can therefore obtain comparable results when using the same methods under similar conditions.
Objectivity is another of the key features. Because researchers should conduct their work in an objective and impartial manner. This is achieved by means of standardised procedures that are independent of the researchers’ personal influences.
