What is the Excellence Strategy?

The Excellence Initiative of the federal government and federal states promotes cutting-edge research at German universities and higher education institutions. It has been named the Excellence Strategy since 2019. This funding programme supports excellent research, at German higher education institutions.

What are Excellence Universities?


Excellence Universities are higher education institutions that receive special funding as part of the Excellence Initiative. These universities provide outstanding research performance and operate according to innovative concepts. Their helps them to survive in the face of international research competition.

The Excellence Universities are located in Hamburg, Berlin, Aachen, Bonn, Cologne, Heidelberg, Karlsruhe, Konstanz, Munich, Tübingen and Dresden.

Which Excellence Clusters are there?


Excellence Clusters are thematically focused research collaborations. They are also supported under the Excellence Strategy funding line. The bundle the expertise from various disciplines and research centres.
