Academia is a broad term for which there is no definitive and generally accepted definition. Because academia does certainly denote the systematic striving for knowledge and understanding within society. It is however above all its demarcation to the domains that do not belong to academia that is contentious. Academia can generally be designated as a dynamic and continuous human aspiration whose objective is to use systematic and methodical approaches to enhance our understanding of the world.
Academics, and therefore conduct to systematically pursue an increase in knowledge and education. They use empirical methods including experiments, observations or theoretical explanations to do this.
What does science entail?
The term academia / science comprises numerous disciplines within which academics and researchers are constantly working to gain insights and to pass on their findings in education and . This includes the formal sciences, natural sciences and interdisciplinary sciences.
The formal sciences could be considered to include the following disciplines:
- Mathematics
- Statistics
- Computer science
- Logic
The natural sciences are further subdivided into the natural and human sciences. The natural sciences comprise sectors like chemistry, physics and biology. The human sciences conversely deal with the humanities and social sciences, including history, philosophy, psychology and sociology. The interdisciplinary sciences generally include engineering or other technical sciences as well as pharmacy and medicine.
What are the characteristics of working in academia?
Working in academia is characterised by certain main features. The objective of systematic research is to impart the results in a comprehensible and reliable manner. This involves academics, scientists and researchers following a clear plan from formulation of their hypotheses to the planning and implementation of experiments or studies and analysis of their results.
