What is a university of applied sciences?

The term university of applied sciences (UAS) originates from England and is increasingly also used in Germany as ‘Hochschule für angewandte Wissenschaften’ (HAW). It is in essence a form of polytechnic or technical college that specialises in practice-oriented and applied research and . These universities of applied science can be distinguished from other universities by the fact that their studies place a stronger focus on practical relevance in terms of scientific knowledge and on its students’ vocational qualification.

Studying at a university of applied sciences

Studies at a UAS should prepare students for specific occupations. These can include engineering, business, computer science, design or health. Practical semesters constitute a substantial component of studies at such a university. This can include the students gaining practical experience in companies or institutions.

The educational qualifications at a university of applied science are no different – students can take study programmes to obtain a bachelor's or master’s degree. Some UASs now also offer programmes in cooperation with universities to promote early career scientists.

The teaching staff at a UAS also have practical relevance. They are often lecturers who contribute extensive practical experience from business and industry. This ensures an application-oriented education and enables applied research.
